Description

Basic Life Support (BLS) is a vital skill that equips individuals with the knowledge and confidence to respond quickly and effectively in life-threatening emergencies. This course has been designed to provide learners with the essential theory and understanding required to support someone experiencing a medical emergency, such as cardiac arrest, choking, or respiratory failure. The training is suitable for healthcare professionals, care workers, and anyone who may be called upon to assist in an emergency situation.

The course begins by exploring the principles of basic life support and the importance of acting quickly. Learners are introduced to the chain of survival, which highlights the critical steps needed to improve outcomes for patients, including early recognition, calling for help, starting effective chest compressions, and providing defibrillation where available. The training explains these steps in detail, ensuring learners understand not only what to do but also why each action is so important.

A key focus of the course is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Learners will study the correct techniques for both adults and children, including the depth and rate of compressions, rescue breathing, and how to maintain an open airway. The role of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) is also explained, along with guidance on how to operate them safely and confidently. Practical elements, where possible, allow learners to apply their knowledge in real-life scenarios and build confidence in responding under pressure.

In addition to CPR and defibrillation, the course covers recognition and response to choking incidents. Learners will gain an understanding of how to deliver back blows and abdominal thrusts effectively to clear an obstruction, as well as how to provide support if the person becomes unresponsive. The training also looks at recovery position techniques, ensuring that learners can manage an unconscious person safely while waiting for professional medical assistance.

By the end of the course, participants will have a thorough understanding of basic life support principles and procedures. They will be able to recognise emergency situations quickly, act with confidence, and deliver life-saving support while awaiting further medical help. This training is designed not only to build knowledge but also to encourage a calm, prepared response in critical situations, giving learners the ability to make a real difference when every second counts.
